FAQ & Game Guide

Welcome to Lord of Chains! This guide covers all the game mechanics and features. Click on any section to expand it.

What is Lord of Chains?

Lord of Chains is a text-based MMORPG where you build an army, attack other players, run espionage missions against enemies, and compete for dominance on the leaderboards. The game runs in real-time with ticks every 15 minutes.

How do I get stronger?

  • Train troops — Train travelers to boost your income, combat, or espionage stats
  • Buy equipment — Purchase items to boost your income, combat, or espionage stats
  • Purchase upgrades — Permanent bonuses to offense, defense, espionage, and more
  • Activate boosts — Temporary percentage bonuses using Coins
  • Allocate proficiencies — Spend stat points for percentage bonuses
  • Join a clan — Team up with other players for clan boosts and coordination
  • Earn Coins — Premium currency earned from treasure chests, the market, or purchased outright

What are Souls?

Souls are the primary currency. You earn them passively each tick from income, and through attacking, espionage, missions, and more. Souls are used to train units, buy equipment, and purchase upgrades.

What is Mana?

Mana is your action currency — you spend it to launch attacks and espionage operations. It regenerates automatically every tick.

What is Mana?

Mana is your action currency. Every attack and espionage operation costs mana. Without mana, you can't take offensive actions against other players.

How does Mana regenerate?

You gain 6 mana per tick (every 15 minutes) by default. There is no hard cap — mana accumulates without limit, so you can save it up.

What costs Mana?

  • Physical Attack — 20 mana
  • Magical Attack — 20 mana
  • Reconnaissance — 10 mana
  • Unit Conversion — 20 mana
  • Unit Elimination — 20 mana
  • Soul Theft — 20 mana

What are Alignments?

Your alignment is your faction, chosen during character creation. Each alignment has its own unique set of classes to choose from.

What are Classes?

Each class provides percentage bonuses to specific stat types — such as offense, defense, or espionage. Your class choice shapes your playstyle and strengths.

Can I change my Class?

You can change your class in Settings at any time before reaching Level 5.

How do I attack?

Go to the Attack page, find a target on the battlelist, and choose either a Physical Attack or a Magical Attack. Each attack costs 20 mana.

What are the two attack types?

  • Physical Attack — Your physical offense vs their physical defense. Does not steal souls. Higher casualty rates. Grants more XP on victory.
  • Magical Attack — Your magical offense vs their magical defense. Steals souls from the target. Lower casualty rates. Grants less XP.

What determines if I win?

Combat is deterministic — if your offense exceeds the defender's defense, you win. The greater your advantage, the more casualties you'll inflict.

How many times can I attack someone?

You can attack the same player up to 5 times per day (physical + magical combined). You can only attack players within your level range (±10 levels by default).

What espionage operations are available?

There are 4 distinct espionage missions:

1. Reconnaissance (10 mana)

Gather intelligence on a target. The more your spy offense exceeds their spy defense, the more stats and unit info you uncover.

2. Unit Conversion (20 mana)

Convert enemy units into your own travelers.

3. Unit Elimination (20 mana)

Permanently destroy a target's units.

4. Soul Theft (20 mana)

Steal souls from the target's on-hand supply and bank.

How do I train units?

Go to the Train page, select a unit type, enter the quantity, and click Train. Training costs souls and consumes travelers (1 traveler per unit).

Unit Categories

There are unit types for every stat in the game — Physical Offense, Physical Defense, Magical Offense, Magical Defense, Spy Offense, Spy Defense, Conversion, Elimination, Soul Steal, and Soul Generation (income).

Why should I bank Souls?

Banked souls are much safer than on-hand souls. Regular attacks cannot steal banked souls. However, the Soul Theft espionage mission can steal a small percentage from your bank.

Are there deposit limits?

Yes — you start with a limited number of deposits per day. Both the number of deposits and the percentage per deposit can be increased through upgrades.

What are Clans?

Clans are player-created groups. Join forces with other players for bonuses, coordination, and social gameplay.

Clan Features

  • Clan Bank — Shared treasury for clan boosts
  • Clan Boosts — Bonuses for all members (income, combat, mana)
  • Clan Hitlist — Shared target coordination
  • Clan Wars — Compete against other clans

Ticks (Every 15 minutes)

Every 15 minutes (at :00, :15, :30, :45) the game processes a "tick" that:

  • Regenerates mana for all players
  • Processes soul income from Reapers
  • Generates new travelers based on upgrades
  • Rotates market auctions

Level Range

You can only attack players within ±10 levels of you. This prevents high-level players from targeting beginners.

Leveling Up

Earn XP from winning attacks and defending successfully.
